For sale is this pre-1900 impressionistic oil on wood panel landscape painting depicting the old foot bridge at Nemours in France. The painting is signed P.A. Gross 1891 Paris. Peter Alfred Gross (1849-1914) was born in Allentown, Pa. and studied in France. He exhibited at the Paris Salon and also at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He was instrumental in the founding of the Allentown Art Museum through a bequest in his will. This landscape exemplifies the subtle effects of light brush strokes of a blurring nature that reflect movement through a mixture of color – leaving a visual “impression” rather than a realistic image of the quiet village of red-tiled roofed buildings on the Loing River. It is interesting to note that on the reverse of the wood panel are several stamped marks- one of the “St. Louis Exposition and music Hall”, and another being a palette with the artist’s information contained within it. The painting is in a Larson Juhl reproduction frame. The wood panel measures 11″ x 17″, overall is 14″ x 20″. Circa 1891.
